A note from Youth Chaplain Kenny Hubbell, dated Oct. 21, 2020
After a great deal of consideration and after gaining consensus with the youth committee of the church, we have made the decision for **YOUTH GROUP** to return to in-person gatherings starting October 28, 2020. I have placed added emphasis on “Youth group” because Formation X (our Sunday morning gatherings for middle schoolers) and our High school Bible study on Monday evenings from 7:30-8:30pm will **REMAIN ZOOM GATHERINGS** (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82820279839 for middle school / https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88208091602 for high school)
We believe it is important at this time to offer BOTH a physical in-person gathering for middle/high school students as well as continuing to offer virtual options for middle/high school students. The Zoom links remain the same for those other events.
(Sunday morning Formation X from 10:00-10:45am https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83544798704 / Monday evening High school Bible study from 7:30-8:30pm https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81908044243)
Regarding our in-person gatherings, here is our plan: For the Wednesdays of October 28th, November 4th, November 11th, November 18th, (No Youth Group on November 25th), December 2nd, December 9th, December 16th we will be meeting **OUTDOORS** and **IN MASKS** and will follow all CDC guidelines regarding social distancing and sanitizing at our normal scheduled times (6:00-7:30 for middle school, 7:30-8:45 for high school).
We will be meeting in the Church Courtyard (San Jose side of the church in front of the sanctuary) unless I tell you otherwise (it’s plausible I email you in the future about meeting at a park or field for a particular event).
For our in-person gatherings you can expect that each student and leader will get their temperature checked as well as answer the following screening questions: 1. Do you have any of these symptoms that are not caused by another condition?
• Fever or chills
• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• Muscle or body aches
• Recent loss of taste or smell
• Sore throat
• Nausea or vomiting
2. Within the past 14 days, have you had contact with anyone that you know had COVID-19 or COVID-like symptoms? Contact is being 6 feet (2 meters) or closer for more than 15 minutes with a person, or having direct contact with fluids from a person with COVID-19 (for example, being coughed or sneezed on).
3. Have you had a positive COVID-19 test for an active virus in the past 10 days?
4. Within the past 14 days, has a school administrator or medical professional told you to self-monitor, self-isolate, or self-quarantine because of concerns about COVID-19 infection?
It would be wise for each family to walk through this screening each week prior to coming to youth group so that we can avoid a situation where a student comes to youth group but cannot participate.
**IMPORTANT** if your child has been sent home because of contact tracing through the school, please do not allow them to come to youth group. It is such a bummer when a student has to be quarantined away from friends at school and at youth group, but it is vital to the success of our return to in-person gatherings that these students remain away until they can safely rejoin us after the alloted time.
We will continue to monitor the ever-changing patterns of COVID and adjust our programming prudently. We will take cues from the schools as well as the larger body of PCPC in determining changes. If we end up having to revert to online gatherings only, we will simply return to the Zoom patterns we have had in place for the past few months.
This is a learning process for all of us and none of this is easy. We will continue to err on the side of caution as our students’ and families’ health and safety are our biggest concern.
We are both excited and ready to see students in person! It still will not be the most ideal, but we look forward to the physical presence of this group back on church grounds. We will continue to offer games, community building, small groups and lessons though with some clever adaptations 🙂
