The Authentic One
A Lenten Prayer by Bill Wallof
We praise you, most Holy God, for sending your only Son to live among us, full of grace and truth. In him we see what is really authentic. He made you known to all who received him. He shared our joys and sorrows, healing the sick and befriending sinners living a full life among his people.
Yet we held him of no account, one from whom we would turn our faces in embarrassment and shame. He was despised and rejected by others and like a lamb led to slaughter, yet he opened not his mouth. Obeying you, he took up the cross and died that we might live.
In this morning hour, let us feel his words… “Just as you did it for one of the least of those who were members of my family, you did it to me.” Turn us in care towards the least of this world. Keep us from insensitivity that causes you pain. Let us not in our own lives repeat the crucifixion.
We praise you that your Lamb, by his courageous sacrifice, overcame death and is now risen to rule the world. He still befriends sinners like us calling us to love one another as he loved us. We trust him to overcome every power that can harm or divide us, and we believe that when he comes in glory we will celebrate victory at his table.
All honor and glory be to the Lamb of God who taught us to pray….
But he was wounded for our transgressions, and crushed for our inequities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)
